It's all over the news! Take these shots, and you will magically lose all that weight you've wanted to lose forever. Sounds fantastic, right? While it sounds great to lose weight with little effort, it does not come without negative side effects. Let's start with the common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, fatigue, dizziness, and dry mouth. That may not be a deterrent because, let's be real, you could experience these from dieting and exercise. Now, let's look at the serious side effects that can have long-term consequences: allergic reactions, pancreatitis, kidney damage, gallbladder disease, vision changes, hypoglycemia, thyroid tumors, and bowel blockages. In addition, rapid weight loss can result in hair loss, "Ozempic face" (gaunt/hollow look with sagging skin and increased wrinkles), "Ozempic butt" (you get the picture), sarcopenia (muscle and strength loss), bone density loss, and rapid rebound weight gain if you stop taking the drug. A study by the NIH found as much as 40%-60% of the weight loss to be lean muscle. While there are ways to combat some of this effect, first determine if you are willing to take on the other health risks associated with these drugs.


This article is for those who opt not to take on these risks. Weight loss can be achieved and it's not just about calories in, calories out.


Movement


First, let's tackle movement. Besides all the other health benefits, movement boosts your metabolism, reduces stress/anxiety, and improves sleep quality. All of these are necessary for weight loss.


How do I start?

  1. Find something you enjoy that is moving. Here are some ideas: walk, dance, yoga, chair yoga, pilates, gardening, group fitness classes, swimming, water aerobics, stretch breaks, pickleball,...

  2. Start small. Ideally, you want to have 30 minutes of activity per day. Start with 5 minutes, then do 5 minutes a few times a day, then 6 minutes, and so on.

  3. Be consistent. Schedule your day to include your activity.

  4. Set realistic goals.

  5. Track your movement. If you have a fancy watch, great. If not, keep a small notebook to track your daily movement and keep yourself accountable.


Diet


Probably my number one recommendation before embarking on a diet and exercise program is to do a 14-day detoxification program. Why? Toxicity can stand in the way of your weight loss journey.
