Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic treatment consists of joint manipulation or adjustments. A chiropractic adjustment is a specific thrust applied to a joint that has lost its motion or is misaligned. The adjustment may be accomplished by hand, with the assistance of a specialized table or a specialized instrument.
Modalities
Modalities include electrical muscle stim, ultrasound, cold laser, ice and heat therapy. They are used to faciliate faster healing and to reduce pain and inflammation.
Massage therapy
Therapeutic massage is used to treat painful or tight areas in the body. Muscle tightness can cause assymetry in the body.
Exercise Rehabilitation/ Stretching/Traction
Exercises to strengthen and stabilize an area are an integral part of your care. Our office focuses mainly on teaching the patient how to perform these at home. Stretching is important to maintaining proper body alignment and the prevention of injuries. Cervical traction is used to retrain proper posture and spinal curves.
Prior to your visit, you will be asked to fill out some preliminary paperwork. After you are checked in and shown around the office, Tony, our patient manager, will sit down with you to begin your consultation. He will ask you for detailed information concerning your condition and answer any questions you may have regarding office procedures.
You will then meet with one of the doctors. You and the doctor will discuss your condition, other health related issues that may be involved and any concerns or questions you may have.
A chiropractic examination consists of three parts: a posture exam, an orthopedic/neurological exam and a palpation exam.
Posture is said to be the window to the spine. Your posture is assessed to determine its relationship to your condition and your overall health.
These are tests designed to rule in or rule out different pathologies or conditions that may be the cause of your condition. For example, some tests will indicate that a disc herniation may be the cause. Certain nerve tests will guide the chiropractor to the area of the spine that requires further examination and/or tests.
Chiropractors are highly trained in the art of palpation. Palpation is the use of the hands to examine the joints and surrounding soft tissue to determine if each joint is in its proper alignment and is moving appropriately.
Why X-rays?
Chiropractors are highly trained in radiology. We take x-rays for many reasons.
1. Check for pathology. Are there fractures or tumors?
2. Check for vertebral subluxation. How is your alignment?
3. Check for the overall health of your spine. Is there a loss of bone density? Are there degenerative changes? Are your disc spaces well-maintained?
The importance is not just when and where to adjust, but when and where not to adjust.
This takes place on your second visit to our office. You will meet with the doctor to discuss your x-rays and exam findings. We will discuss your overall spinal health, your symptoms and your recommended treatment plan. If we do not feel you are a candidate for chiropractic care or that you need additional medical consultations, we will point you in the right direction. It is important to us that you have a clear understanding of what your spinal problems are and how to manage them in order for you to make an informed decision regarding your health care.
Acute Care
This type of care is for conditions with an onset of 6 weeks or less. This can also apply to an acute exacerbation of a previous condition. Most acute care ranges from 2-6 weeks. This is typically covered by most health insurance plans.
Accident Care
(This type of care typically falls under "acute" care. However, as Kentucky laws can be confusing, it is being explained under a separate heading.)
Car Accident?
Kentucky is referred to a "no fault state". As far as medical care, this means that your medical bills are filed to YOUR car insurance. You typically have 100% coverage up to $10,000, unless you have elected to have more coverage. This is referred to as PIP coverage.
We will file your claims for you. You need to have a claim number, claims address and the name of your claims adjuster.
* I recommend reading "What you don't know about buying car insurance can hurt you" by attorney Michael Schafer.
Chronic Care
This type of care is for conditions with an onset more than 6 weeks ago. This may or may not be covered by health insurance.
Supportive Care
This type of care is for patients whose condition can not be completely resolved, but can be managed well with continued periodic adjustments. This may or may not be covered by health insurance.
Wellness Care
This type of care is for patients whose appreciate the lifestyle benefits of consistent chiropractic care. This is not covered by most insurance.
Work Comp Care
Different companies have different rules. You need to get your claim filing information from human resources. Let them know you are coming to see us, in case they need you to sign any paperwork. This is covered by work comp insurance with your place of employment.
Maintenance Care
This type of care is for patients who have already undergone previous care and would like to receive the periodic "tune up" to reduce the likelihood of an exacerbation. This is not covered by most insurance.
Our prices are reviewed with each patient at the beginning of care.
For those with insurance, we will review your chiropractic coverage with you, so you have a good understanding and estimate of what your treatment will cost. We will gladly bill your insurance company. Our doctor is in network with most companies. Any copays or applicable deductible charges are due at the time of service.
Insurance
Most insurance covers at least some chiropractic care. If we are providers for your insurance plan and you have a deductible, you are charged the allowable rate for services as determined by your insurance company. If you have a copay, then that is the amount you will pay on each visit.
Auto Accident
Kentucky is a no-fault state. This means that your auto insurance pays for your medical bills directly up to the amount of your PIP coverage (min $10,000). There is no out-of-pocket for you unless you have a deductible for medical.
Self-Pay or No Chiropractic Coverage
Many patients choose to pay out-of-pocket for their care. Because we do not have to file the insurance paperwork, log in insurance payments or denials, or do any follow-up with insurance, we are able to offer a time-of-service discount on your care. A discounted charge of $36 covers the chiropractic adjustment/ manipulation. Please note this price does not include exam, x-rays, therapies, massage and other services you may receive.
Work Comp
We work with many work comp insurance companies. If we are providers for yours or you have your choice of providers, we can work with you. This is filed just like regular health insurance, except there is usually no out of pocket for you.

A Letter from a patient....
To: Mark A. Hoffman, DC and Kirsten E. Ferguson, DC
I wanted to write and extend my thanks to each of you and your staff (Tony). I have always been treated with a great deal of respect and care during my visits/treatments. I would go so far as to describe it as the best customer service in the medical field that I have ever experienced. I recently read your mission statement and from a customer’s point of view, you’re doing it!
“Our mission is to serve as many families as possible with the highest quality chiropractic care, so that they may realize their full human potential. To educate our patients in matters of health and wellness in the spirit of living, giving and serving. We strive to have our patients reach their Optimal Health.”
Thank you for striving to be better in an industry that has not been hitting the mark…
Sincerely,
Bryan

Tell everyone about your experience with our office. Why should they choose to see a chiropractor? Why should they choose Fern Creek Chiropractic?
What is a subluxation?
The word "subluxation" comes from the Latin words meaning "to dislocate" (luxate) and "somewhat or slightly" (sub). A subluxation means a slight dislocation (misalignment) or biomechanical malfunctioning of the vertebrae (bones of the spine). These disturbances may irritate nerve roots and blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between each of the vertebrae. This irritation may cause pain and dysfunction in muscle, lymphatic and organ tissue as well as imbalance in the normal body processes.
Does insurance cover chiropractic care?
Many insurance plans do cover chiropractic care. To find out what your plan covers, call the customer service number on the back of the card and ask for your chiropractic benefits.
What if I don't have insurance?
We have many cost effective options available. You can pay as you go or purchase a package.
Am I required to sign a contract with your office?
No, we do not require contracts.
What does my insurance mean by "medically necessary care"?
This means that your policy does not cover a set number of visits, but covers the care only if it is "medically necessary" care. "Medically necessary" means that you are being treated for a specific condition on a specific treatment plan set by the doctor.
What is meant by "maintenance care" ?
"Maintenance care" is after the "medically necessary" condition has resolved or reached a level of maximum improvement. Then, care frequency is as needed to maintain that status. Most insurance plans do not cover maintenance care.
What if I want to come in when I feel like I need to?
That is fine. We are more than happy to accomodate you. However, this is not considered medically necessary care and may not be covered by your insurance.
If I am a previous patient, do I have to have a re-exam and x-rays again?
This depends on how long it has been since your last visit and whether or not you plan to file with insurance. If you plan to file with insurance, than the "medical necessity" of your care must be established and a brief re-exam is necessary.
